TimeMachineStatus

TMStatusHub is a private fork of TimeMachineStatus, the open-source menu bar app that shows what Time Machine is doing, rebranded with its own bundle identifier so it can run beside the original. The upstream app lists every backup destination with its details, starts or stops a backup on a chosen volume, shows the error behind a failed backup, and lets the menu bar item’s padding, bold text, background color, and animated icon be adjusted. It replaces the stock TimeMachineStatus install.

What was changed on top of upstream:

  • During a backup the menu bar item becomes a progress pill: a capsule with the animated icon, one line that alternates every ten seconds between the status with its percentage and the time remaining, and a colored fill that grows with progress. The pill keeps the width of the wider line so it does not jump between swaps.
  • The pill color is set in Settings, Appearance, with the six colors of the original rainbow Apple logo as presets plus a free color picker. An optional compact file counter in the menu bar is off by default.
  • The destination cell shows copy progress with denominators (files and bytes done out of total), phase elapsed time, Time Machine’s own time remaining, and a thin capacity bar with the percentage used beneath the “used, free” line.
  • Sparkle self-update is removed so the fork never replaces itself with an upstream release, and tmutil polling runs off the main actor, since tmutil can block for minutes between phases and used to freeze the app.
  • A unit test target decodes tmutil output and renders the pill in every state to catch a blank menu bar item.

The popover keeps upstream’s layout: destinations, general Time Machine info (auto backup, interval, power requirement, skipped paths), a start or stop button, and a menu with Settings (Cmd+,), Browse Backups, and the Time Machine pane of System Settings.
