NotchHub is a private fork of boring.notch, the open-source utility that turns the MacBook notch into a drop-down panel for music controls and a file shelf. The fork started from upstream 2.7.4, was renamed so it cannot be overwritten by the upstream update feed, and has grown a set of drop zones and folder views built around Doug’s daily paperwork.

The main workflow is dragging files to the notch. The notch opens on the shelf tab, which has a row of drop squares next to the shelf panel. The PDF square compresses a single PDF (through PDF Squeezer, with a built-in Quartz fallback) and combines two or more into one document, with a reorder prompt before the merge. The Transfer and Work Papers squares move dropped files into a chosen folder. Files dropped on the shelf itself become tiles that can be dragged out again, stacked by holding a drag over another tile, pinned so they survive drag-out auto-remove, or sent to a Storage space from the context menu. The shelf widens to fit its tiles in one row.

Other things the fork adds:

  • A Storage tab that mirrors a Hazel-managed hold folder, with named spaces (subfolders) for each job shown as chips with live file counts.
  • A countdown timer: a timer icon beside the Home and Shelf tabs opens a Spotlight-style field that accepts 25m, 1h30, 1:30, or @3pm plus a label. The closed notch shows a draining orange pill, and when time runs out a full-screen alert takes over every display with a Dismiss button and 1, 5, and 10 minute snooze pills. The alert sound can be any audio file.
  • Settings for each zone (enable, folder, sound), the PDF combine sort order, the compression profile, and the timer alert.

The upstream music controls, calendar, and live activities are unchanged. The open notch is tinted dark purple rather than black.
