HomeHub
Apple TV wall dashboard with weather, calendars, scores, and events
HomeHub is the dashboard on the wall-mounted Apple TV at home. It shows the time, a full-year calendar grid, current and forecast weather, the next two weeks of calendar events, countdowns to birthdays and holidays, a sports score ticker, and the Home Assistant thermostat, all from Doug’s own data with no subscription. It replaces a paid DAKboard account and the third-party TV app that displayed it.
There are two pieces. The tvOS app is native SwiftUI and fetches weather itself through WeatherKit. Everything else comes from homehub-feed, a Node service on the Mac mini that merges calendars, sports, and the thermostat into one JSON document the TV polls. The feed has a browser admin page, so adding a calendar, changing a ticker setting, or flipping a display option happens from any device without rebuilding the app. A background refresh keeps a last-good copy, so the board always gets an instant answer even when a source is down.
Other things it does:
- Weather: a carousel of locations, each shown for its own dwell time, with an hourly strip, daylight and dew point tiles, and a local moon phase. Using the Siri Remote, focus the forecast and press Select to open daily and hourly line graphs; the header slot opens a RainViewer radar with NWS warning boxes. Active alerts can be summarized server-side into When, What, and Impact lines.
- Calendars: Google and Apple iCal feeds plus a one-time Google sign-in for Workspace calendars that have no iCal address. Each calendar can be limited to a time window, all-day events can render as pills, and declined invites stay off the agenda.
- Bottom ticker: ESPN scores for several leagues at once, live games first, with favorite-team highlighting and an upset tag; RSS news headlines; an “out today” group built from PTO calendars; and birthdays and anniversaries from a Google Sheet. Countdown names can contain ## to print the ordinal (“## Anniversary” becomes “20th Anniversary”).
- Right rail: the calendar agenda, a 2Do tasks list of overdue and due-today items pushed from Doug’s Mac, or an automatic cycle between the two on work days. Right-arrow onto the rail and press Select to flip it by hand.
The app ships to the Apple TVs through TestFlight; the feed deploys to the Mac mini as a launchd service.
